Qualifications & Requirements to become an English teacher in Japan
Standard requirements
- Be a native or native-level English speaker
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in any subject
- Have basic PC skills using Microsoft Office and Google applications
- Teaching experience
- Valid working visa or ability to be sponsored
- Own a PC
Advantage requirements
- Have a teaching qualification, e.g., TEFL, TESOL or Teaching License
- Hold a valid Japanese or international driver’s license
- Can speak at least basic Japanese
None native English speaker applicant requirements
None native English speakers with native level English abilities who require visa sponsorship can still apply to become an ALT but must conform to the following:
- Have at least 12 years of education where the language of instruction was English
- Have valid proof of 12 or more years of education in English (to be submitted to immigration)
